| On September 25, 2009, H.E. Johnson Toribiong, President of the Republic of Palau, declared the waters of Palau's Exclusive Economic Zone (230,000 Sq. Miles / 620,000 Sq. Kms.), as the worlds first officially recognized shark sanctuary, during a meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations. | The grey reef shark is abundant in Palau's waters. This shark can be seen at numerous dive sites around Palau. They can grow to lengths of approximately 2.6 m or around 8 ft and weigh up to 33 kg or 75 lbs. Distinctive features include large eyes, a long broad snout and grey to white coloring with a distinct wide black margin on the caudal or tail fin. | Generally the grey reef shark is found on the outer walls of Palau's barrier reef, congregating in areas of heavy upwelling and stronger currents. It is not uncommon to see loose schools that number in the dozens. The grey reef shark feeds on reef fish, cephalopods, crustaceans and even bony fish. |
